When to use treatments
Treatments are only necessary on hair that has been damaged from heat styling, chemicals, manipulation like braids or very tight ponytails, or dryness caused by excessive product buildup or lack of washing.
If you do not style using high heat and do not have colored hair you likely don't need treatments. A high quality shampoo, conditioner, and water soluble products should be all you need. If you feel dry, try clarifying before investing in treatments.
Treatments work best on clean hair because there is no buildup to block them from entering the hair shaft. I highly recommend doing your treatments after clarifying.
It is so important to read the manufacturers instructions before using your treatment. Many of these treatments are used in an order than is different from regular cleansing and conditioning. You may not like the results you get if you do not follow instructions.
Detoxing treatments
These treatments help remove minerals and metals on your hair and scalp.
If you suspect you have buildup, I recommend these steps:
shampoo hair and scalp with a clarifying shampoo until hair foams.
apply these detoxing treatments
do a treatment. If you are using Olaplex #3 it will ask you to wash and condition after.
If you have been using heavy oils, butters, and silicones your initial wash may make your hair feel very dry. This is caused by the outer lubricants being removed. You may need to continue this detox until you are able to remove enough to let the water penetrate and hydrate your hair, which may mean several shampoos. It will get worse before it gets better. You will know things are working if your conditioner or treatment works much better than usual. This is because you have chipped away at the buildup.
Some hair will take over a year to recover from buildup dryness, so be patient. Signs that you are over washing are that your hair will foam up immediately upon washing with very little shampoo and matt and web together. If you experience this switch to a gentler shampoo.
Bond building treatments
These products enter the inside of your hair and repair the internal structure that was damaged by heat, color, and manipulation damage. I prefer these over moisturizing treatments as moisturizing treatments often only coat the hair and provide temporary relief.
Protein treatments
Protein treatments act as the exoskeleton of your hair when it has been damaged severely from bleach, relaxers, and chemical damage. If you use this when your hair is not breaking it can make your hair feel hard.
