Summer at Squee
Kokila, 304 pgs., ISBN: 9780593111314, Grades 4 and up
Phoenny Fang is ready for the best summer ever, her last summer as a camper at Summertime Chinese Culture, Wellness, and Enrichment Experience, or SCCWEE (Squee, to those in the know). Right from the start, though, her plans for a great experience seem to be tanking. The Squad of her friends has been split up to accommodate some first-time campers who don’t seem to have the same connection to the cultural activities as Phoenny and her friends. And really, what Chinese person doesn’t want to connect to their heritage? And why else would you attend a cultural camp, anyway? As Phoenny gets to know the new campers, all of whom are adoptees, she and others at camp begin to expand their sense of what it means to be Chinese American and how to make room for everyone to be themselves.
