Murray Out of Water
Quill Tree Books, 400 pgs., ISBN: 9780063326811, Grades 6 and up
Murray has a magical connection to the ocean. She has lived on the coast of New Jersey her whole life and the ocean has been her safe place. Murray is secretly questioning her sexual/gender identity while living with a family that essentially disowned Murray's older brother when he came out as gay.
When a hurricane rips through her community, her family is forced to evacuate to her aunt and uncle's house in upstate New York; the same Aunt and Uncle that stood up for her older brother when he came out. While living at her Aunt, Uncle, and cousin Blake's house, Murray finds what it's like to live with a family that accepts and encourages her to be herself. When she finds her first true friend who is exploring his/her trans identity, she agrees to participate in a roller drag ball at the local skating rink. When Murray's mom finds out about this, she unleashes a torrent of anger and homo/transphobia, but Murray will no longer hide who she is or accept her mom's views.
