From the beginning of his life, Father Peyton prayed the Rosary each night with his family. This is what makes his preaching on the topic credible. He, like many of you, can speak firsthand about the benefits of families praying together for our families, parishes, and our wider communities. When families pray together, they create a deeper bond between themselves and God. This bond of love is what nourishes each member of the family and allows them to emulate Our Lord in His sacrificial love. Through God’s grace, mothers and fathers, children and grandparents, aunts and uncles, and cousins find a purpose for their life and the means to live it, even in the hard times.
In the film, “Pray,” several families discussed the different challenges they had faced as husbands and wives. In one case, it was the struggle to have children. For the other two couples, the challenge was related to growing into husbands and wives that were united in their love for one another and fully giving their attention and time to their spouse and children.
Each couple spoke of how their prayer of the Rosary as husband and wife, though “awkward” or new at first, was an incredibly intimate and transformative experience. It was the catalyst for a deepening of their relationship with God in humility, trust, and hope, and likewise with one another.
God’s plan for each man and woman, boy and girl, is to grow in love for Him and one another. The natural and supernatural place for this to begin is within our families. When husbands and wives unite in prayer that includes their children and extended family, God teaches, leads, and heals us through His grace. And from there, we can and are inspired to bring the light of Christ to our parishes, neighbors, schools, and workplaces.
Father Peyton knew and believed completely in the power of family prayer to bring about a better world. His example, preaching, and ministry, continued in his name by Holy Cross Family Ministries, provide real-life evidence of what God can and wants to do for our families and the world if only we invite Him into our families each day.
Please pray for Venerable Patrick Peyton’s Cause for Sainthood so that more families will make family prayer, especially the Rosary, an essential ingredient in their daily lives, one that nourishes family members and all they meet.
