Challenge #8

Happy Tracks!

Better Together!

Collaborating, or working together, is something we highly value at Glebe. This challenge gave all your specials teachers a chance to hang out a bit, and come up with a combination ART/PE/Music challenge that we think you'll really enjoy. The way we understand things, or get meaning from what we're thinking & doing, gets a lot more interesting when we explore & experience it in lots of different ways. Connections between Art, Music, and PE, go way back. All three activities are ways to learn about our world and express ourselves. We want you to mashup Art, Music, and PE, and we can't wait to see what you come up with!!

Choose a Song

What song have you got stuck in your head, or what do you hum when you're feeling good?

Respond to it Creatively

While listening to your song, create a painting, collage, sculpture, dance, percussion piece...poem! whatever you want, to celebrate this favorite tune.

Share It!

This challenge is all about connecting...so share a short video of your song and how you responded to it on the Art/ PE/Music Mashup Padlet.

Sky's the Limit!

Here are just a few examples of ways art, music, and movement work beautifully together.

Wassily Kandinsky, (1866 - 1944), Composition 8, Oil on canvas, 55 x 83 in.

Wassily Kandinsky wanted to create the visual equivalent of writing a symphony with his paintings. The artist used colors and shapes to evoke sounds and named his paintings as if they were musical pieces, such as Composition 8.

Pablo Picasso, (1881 - 1973), The Three Musicians, Oil on canvas, 6 1/2 x 6 1/2 ft.

Picasso often referenced music, dance and theater in his work. This painting is thought to be representations of three of his friends playing musical instruments.

Stuart Davis, (1892-1964), Pad No. 4, 1947. Oil on canvas, 14 x 18 in.

Stuart Davis was really into jazz. He loved making connections between the visual patterns in his pictures and the syncopated rhythms of this modern form of American music. He also used "slang" from the jazz scene. Here in the title, Pad is slang for house.

Keith Haring, (1958 - 1990), Dancing Dog Dj, print

Keith Haring captured the energy of NYC's graffiti/ art/music scene in the 70s/80s. He created a visual, "language" of symbols, that he would paint on just about anything

Color Wheel Flash Mob

Several years ago at Glebe, Art, PE, classroom teachers, even Mrs. Borg!, worked with first graders to pull off this amazing Color Wheel Flashmob!

Better Together!

Here's a video from a school wide project we did at Glebe several years ago called Better Together. Jack Johnson's song Better Together was the perfect way to tie together pics of our art making, and evoke the "warm fuzzy feeling" we get from celebrating each other.
