Forum Theatre is a well-established tool to raise awareness of critical issues. 'Theatre of the Oppressed' was created by Augusto Boal in the 1970s. Forum Theatre is an interactive and participative theatre experience. Its aim is to encourage the audience to come on stage, take action in the play, and change the outcome/ending together with the actors. Rather than receiving predefined messages, participants are invited to interrupt the performance, enter the dramatic situation, replace a character and test an alternative response. The 'Joker' acts as facilitator, mediator and critical challenger, connecting the actors and audience, managing the intervention process and encouraging reflection on the consequences and feasibility of proposed actions. In this way, the theatre becomes a safe rehearsal space in which participants can explore responses to situations that may occur in real academic and research environments. GEPINC Forum Theatre performances on gender diversity focus on the lack of gender inclusivity in RIOs. The Forum Theatre is expected to bring about sustainable behavioural changes, raising awareness and reducing/eliminating gender biases and discrimination against underrepresented gender groups and promoting their integration in R&I. According to various studies involving direct exposure to and in-person interaction with minority groups, these interventions significantly reduce biases towards those minority groups. GEPINC Forum Theatre is structured around three complementary objectives: (i) preparing participatory Forum Theatre activities addressing the lack of inclusion of underrepresented gender groups in research and innovation organisations; (ii) implementing the performances within the partner organisations and engaging local academic communities and institutional stakeholders; and (iii) documenting the experience through practical leaflets that can support dissemination and replication by other European RIOs.
