Soil Pit

Our soil pit had located behind delhantly hall (figure 1) had three clear soil horizons and a possible forth. The O horizon can be seen at the top (figure 3) and had a great concentration of roots and other organic matter. It was the darkest of the soil layers. The A horizon was very well developed with lots of roots and organic materials as well. There was a possible plow horizon that could be between A horizon and B horizon, but the likelihood of the area being disturbed in the last 50 years makes this unlikely to be a plow horizon. Our B horizon was missing the top part that is usually denoted by its red coloring due to oxidation of minerals, while we did find red soil it was inconsistent and concentrated around roots. The C horizon was a similar color to the B horizon but was slightly more sandy and at the bottom of the pit (figure 2).
