Part 1: Websim

Make something yourself

Before we go any further, let’s get our feet wet and use websim for the first time!

Open up websim in a new tab, log in or make an account, and create your first page. Try typing into the websim address bar, "http://www.myspace.com/ + the name of your favourite historical figure." That's it! I wanted you to see how insanely easy it is to use. Everyone knows how to type in a URL.

Next, let’s make an actual art generator as I have done.

Start a fresh session* and type into the address bar, "make me a website with a stunning piece of generative art inspired by + the first thing that comes to mind, with controls for key parameters." How was that? You may not have gotten exactly what you were expecting, if you were expecting anything at all, but that's part of the fun!

*When you're on an existing websim page, anything you type in the address bar adds to the existing session instead of starting a new one. This might not be immediately clear. To start over, click the "home" button at the top of the page, which takes you back to websim's opening screen. From there, you can type your prompt into the address bar and start a new session automatically.

Next page: You don’t need to know how to code; you just need to think about how shapes work
