Students enrolled in the MSTP program at the College of Medicine who choose to be part of GEMS are automatically accepted as advanced standing 2nd year students, due to completion of their didactic learning in basic sciences during the M1 & M2 years in the MD program.
During the summer term prior to fall matriculation, students enroll for 6 hours of GEMS 599 research to participate in lab rotations and research activities- handled by MSTP administration. By the time MSTP students matriculate in the fall term, they have already chosen their lab, PI and research concentration. MSTP/GEMS stipends are supported through their PI and/or the MSTP department.
MSTP students are required to meet all GEMS curricular requirements for 2nd year GEMS students and maintain good standing, including passing of the preliminary examination. Once the student has been accepted to doctoral candidacy by the Graduate College, they will need to continue to meet all prescribed requirements for their thesis defense as explained below.
