The GEMS program is an intense doctoral program and requires its students to be capable of challenging themselves and consistently putting in their best efforts to succeed both in their studies and research. For a student to be at their best, their physical and mental health must be prioritized.
Additionally, to promote mental health awareness, the College of Medicine has established a Resiliency Center to address the well-being of students through the availability of six successive talk therapy sessions, available at no charge to students; contact Dr. Jenna Duffecy, 312 413 1225; 1601 W. Taylor Street, Room 441
There may be times during a student’s course of study when they are referred to the Resiliency Center by GEMS. If a student declines voluntary intervention with a mental health professional, they may be required to submit for a Fit for Participation at University Health Services (UHS) to assess their mental health and well-being.
In addition to the Resiliency Center, UIC offers The Counseling Center as a primary resource providing comprehensive accessible and culturally sensitive mental health services to foster personal, interpersonal, academic, and professional thriving, available to UIC students. Staff includes psychologists, psychiatrist, doctoral psychology trainees, and social worker.
