GEMS students are encouraged to apply for fellowships and awards throughout their time in the program. Trainees who are able to successfully secure an individual fellowship are awarded a one-time $2000 award for their efforts.

National Institutes of Health
Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) T32- Originated by a Principal Investigator, a T32 research grant is a five year award that seeks to develop and enhance research training opportunities for predoctoral and postdoctoral fellows. Trainees must be US citizens or Permanent Residents. * ineligible for $2000 award
Kirschstein Individual Predoctoral Award for M.D./Ph.D. and other Dual Degree Fellowships (NRSA) F30- The purpose of this Kirschstein-NRSA program is to enhance the integrated research and clinical training of promising predoctoral students, who are matriculated in a combined MD/PhD or other dual-doctoral degree training program (e.g. DDS/PhD, AuD/PhD, DVM/PhD), and who intend careers as physician-scientists or other clinician-scientists, i.e. GEMS/MSTP students. Trainees must be US citizens or Permanent Residents. *eligible for $2000 award
Kirschstein Predoctoral Individual National Research Service Award (NRSA) F31- The purpose of this Kirschstein-NRSA program is to enable promising predoctoral students with potential to develop into a productive, independent research scientists, to obtain mentored research training while conducting dissertation research. The F31 is also used to enhance workforce diversity though a separate program. Trainees must be US citizens or Permanent Residents. *eligible for $2000 award
American Heart Association (AHA) Predoctoral Fellowship- To enhance the integrated research and clinical training of promising students who are matriculated in pre-doctoral or clinical health professional degree training programs and who intend careers as scientists, physician-scientists or other clinician-scientists, or related careers aimed at improving global cardiovascular, cerebrovascular and brain health. Trainees may be domestic or international as long as the applicant has an AHA-accepted visa throughout duration of the award. *eligible for $2000 award
NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP)- The purpose of the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) is to help ensure the quality, vitality, and diversity of the scientific and engineering workforce of the United States. The program recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students who are pursuing full-time research-based master's and doctoral degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) or in STEM education. The GRFP provides three years of support over a five-year fellowship period for the graduate education of individuals who have demonstrated their potential for significant research achievements in STEM or STEM education. NSF actively encourages submission of applications from the full spectrum of diverse talent that society has to offer which includes underrepresented and underserved communities. *eligible for $2000 award
College of Medicine Dean’s Scholar Award- All rising 4th year GEMS students (G2-G3 MSTP) must apply for the College of Medicine’s Dean’s Scholar Award in May before the start of their 4th year of study. This award pays the full annual stipend and fees for the individual. Six individuals are chosen as winners of the award and receive an additional $3000 to use for research related travel expenses for up to two years. All trainees whose permanent advisor has a primary appointment within the College of Medicine are eligible to apply.
