WQFS Guilford College Radio

About Us

"The station started as a student club, The Fine Music Broadcasting Society, in 1965. The Board of Trustees at Guilford College received a license from the Federal Communications Commission in 1966. After receiving donations of both money and equipment, the station began a daily broadcast schedule from 4 p.m. until midnight in 1970. The student management quickly worked to spread the length of programming to a 14-hour day.

WQFS started as a 10-watt station with a 5-mile broadcast radius. In 1979, the wattage increased to 1,900 watts, where it still stands today. This gives Guilford one of the largest cast ranges for college radio in North Carolina, boasting a 30 mile broadcast radius with a potential 300,000 listeners. Today, WQFS attempts to maintain an 24-hour broadcast day 7 days a week.

WQFS operates on the frequency 90.9 out of Founders Hall on Guilford College’s campus. Operated by students and community volunteers, WQFS provides Greensboro with refreshing programming including a huge range of musical genres, with a focus on independent music labels. In addition to music, WQFS provides news, lectures and other culturally-rich programming. In August 2012 the station got a major face lift in a newly renovated space. WQFS is consistently ranked by The Princeton Review as one of the best college radio stations in the country."
