THE MOUTH OF THE WOLF / THE EYES OF THE LAMB
Captain Koret Swan
32 Sun of the 5th Umbral Moon
(All Saints Wake)
Plot 13, 13 Ward, The Goblet
(Firelight Trading Co.)Â
Many things can be said about Captain Koret Swan, but far less than she's willing to admit. The first-born, legitimate daughter to Fleet Captain Dimitri Swan, she was thrust into captaincy out of a misguided sense of legacy that spurred her father's ire. With much of her early years shaped by his disdain, she persevered despite (or, perhaps more accurately, in spite of) his loathing until she outlived him entirely. Defined by the death of a sister she could not prevent - one she unwittingly witnessed - she grapples with the 'curse' of the Echo and all of its machinations alongside her new-found freedoms.
WHEN YOU INHALE / I FILL YOUR LUNGS
Crumble like a temple built from future daughters
TO WASTELAND WHEN THE OCEANS RECEDE
A lot of things could be said about the late Fleet-Captain Swan's eldest daughter; nothing of which he'd be eager to regale. "A blight," he once remarked, "A cunt." If you relayed it back to Koret, she'd give you a twisted little smile and a roll of her shoulders. "He makes sure I never forget."
As the eldest legitimate child of Dimitri Swan, Kor has always been defined by her binary gender. Born a woman to a man who valued masculinity above all else, her status as the eldest and most legitimate thrust upon her responsibilities she had no choice to want and abuse she did not rightly deserve. Many of her earliest memories were of her father's fist, whether by her own actions or defending her sister from his ire, and she learned quickly that no amount of appeasement, placation or resistance would ever deviate his feelings. He hated her because he believed she had no value.
This abuse would continue well into early adulthood. Kor's mother had passed some years prior, with some speculating this was due to her father's actions, and Lily had bloomed into a beautiful young woman who eclipsed her feral, mangier sister. Without a (legitimate) son to inherit his legacy, Dimitri was reluctantly forced to take Kor on as a protege and she was forced into service. Inheriting her father's ship the Wolfsbane, it was his expectation that she would utterly fail in her charge due to inexperience and the complexity (and oftentimes the illegality) of his tasks. However, assisted by her first mate Robince Emsworth and a rag-tag crew her father believed too useless to sail, they managed to successfully chart out their first course and all those succeeding it.
In the first year of Kor's charge, Dimitri's attention shifted from his eldest daughter to his youngest. With a kind heart and an intense need to please, Kor returned to Limsa to find her sister betrothed to a member of Kugane's crime syndicate in exchange for wealth for Dimitri’s empire. Though Kor did her best to plead with Lily to leave with her, it was her sister's misguided belief that her marriage would redeem her in the eyes of their father and, in return, gain absolution and respect.
This belief would carry her through the marriage, her new husband's abuse, and her eventual murder - the latter of which Kor was given unwilling clairvoyance through the awakening of The Echo. However, no amount of sailing could give her enough time to save her sister. When she arrived back in the city, it was all she could do to identify the body three-days bloated by the sea and enact vengeance on her sister's killer. Though she called it justice, it never brought her peace.
Hollow from Lily's death, Kor nearly joined her down in the depths until she was pulled from the brink by Crow, another Fleet Captain in direct competition with her father, and directed to Firelight Trading Company and Rexonus Fira'lux who put her up for some time to assist in her recovery. Though she'd known the man and his organisation for some time, this more intimate exposure to the patriarch, his home and customs endeared her to the company, and she now considers herself a close associate.
Some months after her sister's death Crow reached out to Kor about a 'shipment' she was suddenly unable to fulfil: the passage of goods and services to Firelight, as well as a mechanic who required transportation. Though typically not a passenger ship, her reluctant acceptance brought her into contact with Vamperious Grey, an Ala Mhigan man who shared similar circumstances regarding fathers and upbringing, and the two spent much of the journey conversing with each other as a result. Though it had not been her intention to grow close to anyone, especially not in the wake of her sister's death, Kor found herself craving his company the more they spent together. After a few awkward encounters (including one with the Echo), they eventually confessed their feelings to each other.
In more recent times the murder of her father has thrust Kor's life into disarray. Speculation around his demise often falls square on her shoulders and that of Firelight Trading Company, given neither held no real love for him, but with no real proof to go off many of the accusations fall flat. Having re-entered the world after a bout of 'grief', she now must navigate what to do with her father's legacy and her new-found freedom.Â
You cast the dust into nothing
AND WASH OUT THE SALT FROM MY HANDS
These hooks are not comprehensive! Rather, they serve as a springboard for potential interactions based on a few core tropes, backstory info, characterisations, etc. You are more than welcome to message me OOC to hash things out before approaching.
THE WOLFSBANE. For many years now Kor has held captaincy over her father's flagship known as The Wolfsbane. Though predominately a merchant ship, it has been known to ferry all manner of cargo - inanimate or not - to far-flung shores and distant locals. Rumour has it that her ship was oft used for illegality up until Dimitri's death, but Kor seems disinclined to prove it one way or the other. Nonetheless, she has met a variety of people over the years through various jobs.
Though I don't really have the time to maintain a crew for the purposes of roleplay, I am not opposed to people working/have worked for Kor in the past. This does require a level of discussion but, if you're interested, let me know!
DIMITRI SWAN. A fleet captain based out of Limsa Lominsa, Dimitri was respected and reviled in equal measure - often the only difference in the two being who you talked to. Because of this, his reputation often proceeds hers, and comes with the caveat of him speaking poorly about her at nearly every opportunity. The mystery of his recent demise has all eyes on his eldest daughter; both in the rumour mill of how he died, but also in what she intends to do now that she will inherit his legacy.
CRIMINALITY. Kor's sister married a high-ranking member of the Kugane underbelly before her death, and his subsequent demise not long after the captain's return to Limsa Lominsa has raised no end of speculation. Without proper proof that she committed a crime, something Kor is obviously disinclined to do, there's no easy way to pin the blame. That has not stopped some from attempting to enact revenge.
FIRELIGHT TRADING COMPANY. Kor is an affiliate of Firelight Trading Company, and is often contracted to move goods between their various outposts. Her cousin, Ashe, is the leader of the couriers - a fact she (affectionately) dubs "a massive fucking headache" - and she can sometimes be found enjoying a cup of coffee at The Fireside.
FAMILY TIES. Kor has a rather large family. On her father's side, she has Eve and Ashe. On her mother's, she has Paprika. Sometimes she doesn't mind it. Other times, when they are menaces, she hates it. If you know a member of her family, chances are they've mentioned her in passing at least once.
LOVE LETS YOU KNOW YOU ARE SAFE / VOILENCE LETS YOU KNOW YOU ARE PURE
PAPRIKA SWAN
As many times as Kor has tried to disown her, Paprika has always come back. Bound by blood on her mother's side, her younger cousin causes her no end of strife. She loves her, though... sometimes. (If she avoided trouble and listened to her, she's sure the sometimes would improve.)
ASHLEY HAWKE
A cousin on her father's side, Kor was reluctant to reach out to Ashe on account of her father abandoning his brothers. Ashe, on the other hand, would have no such thing. Though she sometimes feels weird about their relationship, the brawler is quick to remind her of its validity and how much she cares for her. At this stage, they're more like sisters.
EVELYN RIVERS
Kor's final cousin on her father's side. Though their relationship isn't strong, they refer to each other in a familial way and will go out of their way to look out for each other.
REXONUS FIRA'LUX
Patriarch of Firelight Trading Company, Rex is as close to a paternal figure as Kor is willing to consider. Though she rarely shows it, she values his honesty, integrity and protection. He has been instrumental in breaking her from her cycle of abuse and faciliating her freedoms over the past few years.
VAMPERIOUS GREY
The Head Mechanic for Firelight Trading Company, Kor met Vamp when she was tasked with ferrying him from Limsa Lominsa to Ul'dah after his original deal with Crow 'suspiciously' fell through. Bonding over similar upbringings, Kor was charmed by his easy-going nature, despite him being the antithesis of what she thought she wanted, and the two have been in a relationship ever since.
SHINING CROW
Pirate Captain of the Atlas and her father's direct competition, Crow took Kor under her wing after she learned of her tenuous relationship with her father. The two are close as a result, even if Kor often disapproves of Crow's methods.
SIYOH MARI
Siyoh was one of the very first people Kor met when introduced to Firelight Trading Company. As a result, she holds a lot of respect for the Doman woman who tends to dote on her when she's on the premises.
BLINK VANIRO
Honestly? Kor doesn't even know her own relationship with the infamous sky pirate. As much as they have made out in the past, they have also tried to kill each other, and she has since stopped trying to predict which it'll be at any given moment. These days they seem generally friendly with each other, bumming booze and cigarettes off each other as they bitch about life.
SARRAI AVERY
The first time Kor met Sarrai, the heiress said, "I heard you want to die, can I have your bones?" To which Kor replied, "Absolutely fucking not." Anyway, they're best friends.
KATLINNE DEVEREUX
Originally meeting on one of Kor's many seafaring ventures, she enjoys Kat's take-no-shit attitude and considers her a younger version of herself. This, in turn, earned her Kor's sisterly protection and will come to her defence where she is needed.
Y'SHERO TIA
Ashe's husband and one of Firelight's doctors, Shiro has patched Kor up far more than she is willing to admit. She appreciates his tact and matter-of-fact delivery.
ZOLREA
One of the Couriers under Firelight Trading Company, Kor often comes into contact with Zolrea when she's helping Ashe with a mission or out on the town. She knows the woman is good for backup if she gets in a punch-up.
ROBINCE EMSWORTH
A disgraced son of one Ishgard's high houses, Robince fell into sailing just before the calamity and was propositioned for his own captaincy by Dimitri if he would overthrow Kor's. However, taking personal offence to her father's ploys, he chose to ally with Kor instead and has remained ever faithfully by her side.
SHOW ME THOSE PRETTY WHITE JAWS / SHOW ME WHERE THE DELICATE STOPS
Heya! If you have read this far, I think it's important to note I have a series of AU's for Koret. They do not factor into her in-game portrayal, but exist elsewhere for me to explore and enjoy. If you see content that looks out of place, it could be because I'm defaulting to these!
This is Kor's Warrior of Light AU! Though I predominately write this over on @edenfelled, I may refer to aspects of it on @gatheredfates. Much of her story is the same except, after her sister dies, she joins the Scions and follows the traditional WoL journey. Her Azem is called Kore!
Though this is subject to change as more information about the Thirteenth comes out, I often chatter mindlessly about my other OC Z being one of Kor's shards. He has his own self-contained story for the time being!
