SHE LOST HER VOICE DOWN BY THE RIVER
Azuma Yumishi
13th Sun of the 4th Umbral Moon
Plot 51, 3 Ward, Shirogane
(The Doman Dragon)
As the sole daughter of renowned samurai Kaito, Azuma grew up in occupied Yanxia during the Garlean occupation and participated heavily in its resistance. Though trained in her family's art, she deviated from their craft by honing her abilities as a shinobi through Doman art, dancing and tea-making, and became well-known in both polite and impolite society under the mantra of 'the enemy of my enemy is my friend'. Though she was critically injured when fleeing Doma, she has not let her disability impede her, and through the Warrior of Light's liberation of her home has travelled back to open her own business alongside her best friend Siyoh's — offering hospitality to any who might wish to traverse their homeland.
SCREAMING FOR COURAGE, TAKE OCEANS AND HER
Azuma never knew a childhood without occupation.
Her grandfather immigrated to Doma from Sui-no-Sato after disagreeing with their reclusive ways and founded a school of martial arts that blended the fluidity of their water-born heritage with the lethality of the samurai. As soon as she could hold a knife she was trained in an assortment of blades, becoming adept at the knife and the katana, and assisted her father in training rebel Doman children under the cover of night. They, in turn, tutored Azuma in their traditional ways of dance, art, talk and teamaking, and she became a masterful shinobi in both battle prowess and intelligence. None of the occupying force suspected the young miko capable of brutality, and she played on that nativity to her benefit. Often arm in arm with her best friend Siyoh, the two became masterful at feeding intel to the rebellion and undermining Garleans who made the mistake of trusting them.
Unlike her father, whose moral compass aligned more closely with traditional honour, Azuma was of a mind that any person willing to help liberate Doma was one she was willing to help, and her father's dojo was soon filled with ruffians who had slipped under the nose of the colonisers. With what little money they scrounged together she also made trips to Kugane in secret, working with foreign powers willing to assist their besieged nation for whatever price she could afford. Most of the time this was the imparting of her school of martial arts to whoever was willing to learn, and she became well-known in various circles for her ability and disregard of personal alliances. 'The enemy of my enemy is my friend' was taken literally here, with very few in the East looking on Garleans favourably.
To some extent, Azuma suspected that's why they retaliated. Knowing that they were mobilising for another attack, Siyoh was smuggled on a ship from Kugane while she returned home to try and help her father, though they were intercepted shortly after her arrival. Her village was bombed, Kaito was killed, and Azuma was critically injured on her escape, suffering major damage and burns to her legs that renders her ability to walk difficult even to this day.
Separated from her best friend, adrift in a land she barely knew, Azuma suffered an immense period of depression as she tried to come to terms with her new sense of self. Shifted to Mor Dhona with the first wave of refugees, her diligence caught the eye of a Lalafell woman called Kokoya Koya who, upon learning of her plight, agreed to assist her in returning to Doma and restoring her family's name and honour as long as she agreed to her sponsor. This put Azuma in touch with Firelight patriarch Rexonus Fira'lux and, by extension, Siyoh. Unbeknownst to her, the other woman had fallen in with the Company after arriving to Eorzea, and Azuma's arrival was one of the catalysts that helped restore her memory after a bought of amnesia.
With her best friend returned to her and the promise of liberation on the horizon, Azuma was one of the initial Domans to return home and work on its restoration. Taking the shattered remnants of her family estate, she rebuilt the house from the ground up, turning the burned wreckage into a quaint bed and breakfast she aptly named 'The Doman Dragon'. This business sits alongside Siyoh's noodle bar called 'The Umbral Udon' and offers refuge for tourists and returning Doman's alike.
Though Azuma lives a quiet life now, who knows where life might take her when the calm of peace fails to rouse a body primed for war, and Siyoh's attraction Firelight's patriarch tempt them ever westward...
These hooks are not comprehensive! Rather, they serve as a springboard for potential interactions based on a few core tropes, backstory info, characterisations, etc. You are more than welcome to message me OOC to hash things out before approaching.
Doma: Azuma's home is Doma, and most of her life has been spent in Yanxia or the city proper. Her family's school of martial arts is well-known in the region and, even now, young warriors will make the trip to the Dragon in the hopes she may be able to impart some skill or wisdom. Azuma has no qualms helping to train those interested in her craft or simply want to pay respects to her family's shrine, though she can get frustrated by her own limitations. If your character is also from Doma, they probably interacted with her or her father to some capacity.
Kugane: Because the young woman cared little for city politics, she had the rare ability to mingle with the various peoples' of Kugane and got along with most no matter their creed or personal allegiance. These days she still liaises with certain organisations and people of note, helping to direct funds, trade and other measures intended to bolster her nation while they recover from their occupation. Those with criminal alliances are more likely to know of her, only because she was not shy about delving as deep as she needed to go in order to supply resources for her homeland. One's moral standing seldom gives her pause unless they have committed reprehensible crimes.
Garleans: Azuma holds little love for Garleans. Though she tries to employ patience and forgiveness, especially in the wake of the Final Days, she is only human, and old traumas run deep. If your character is a Garlean, she will be suspicious of them to start no matter how altruistic they might seem.
Eorzea: Azuma spent a short time in Mor Dhona helping to reunite fellow refugees with their displaced family members and allocate places, jobs and resources for them to access. She would persue nearly ever lead with tenacity and leave no stone unturned. If your character was in the region during this time, they may have come into contact with her.
The Doman Dragon: Do you want an authentic Doman experience? Come to the Doman Dragon! Azuma's greatest joy is her bed and breakfast and she's determined to deliver exemplary hospitality to people who visit Doma. She also offers her home and hearth to Domans returning home who need a place to stay for a few days while they get their bearings and come to terms with their losses at no cost. Regardless of if you're a tourist or a local, her home is open to you.
