I believe in the importance of providing students with the opportunity to personalize their work. Research shows that this approach increases engagement as students direct their own learning based upon personal interests. It also improves retention as they recall the design process that they they themselves created. Here are some examples below of personalized learning in my classroom.
10th grade students were asked to create a virtual museum about World War II. They personalized their museum by choosing which aspects of WWII they wanted to showcase in their museum. This student chose themes such as the war in the Pacific and the role of women.
6th grade students were asked to complete a project about Roman architecture through any medium of their choice. These students personalized their project by choosing Minecraft as their medium.
9th grade students were asked to complete a discussion of world peace in a format of their choice. This student personalized her project by opting for a VLOG to express her views.
6th grade students were asked to complete a project about careers available in their community, careers they would like to pursue, and the careers of their family members. This student chose a VLOG to present what they had learned.
