The internet is full of online bots that will follow anyone who unfollows them. For those of you that might be new to this, we're here to help give you insight on what it means.
Followers and follower counts are a hugely important part of social media marketing, which explains why they can feel such a big deal when you find yourself abandoning yours. So if someone notices your follower count has dropped suddenly, the first question they may have is "What does this mean?"
For starters: It doesn't really mean anything at all—everyone's account fluctuates based on who follows or unfollows them on Instagram. But, when you notice it happening to you, the first thing to do is assess that list of people who you haven't seen interacting with your content in a while.
Why Do We Unfollow People on Instagram?
There's definitely a bunch of reasons why people unfollow, but here are some of the most common:
The poster is inactive or has deleted their account: If you followed someone and are now seeing they have unfollowed you, chances are they have either deleted their account or just no longer post regularly. You don't want to follow accounts that will give you little to no return on investment.
They've blocked you: This is actually done on purpose for a lot of people. Blocking someone gives you the ability to immediately unfollow them if you choose, and if they've blocked you for any reason, it's likely because their interactions stopped.
Someone else has unfollowed them: Sometimes this might be a family member or friend, in which case it would be best to unfollow both parties as this could cause some serious drama. However, when it happens on a major platform like Instagram or Twitter, it wouldn't be wise to pursue the issue unless you're ready to hold a grudge against the person who instigated the drama.
