How to Play: Most of the fun comes from exploring the puzzle. If I explain how to play it would probably spoil most of the fun. Stare at the screen and try stuff. I think you'll find it a fun mixture of intuition and logic.
Why: To re-create a puzzle from my childhood. Growing up I had hand held games that were not electronic. There would be a small box with a glass top and metal balls inside. There were no instructions, rather the purpose of the game, and how to play was to be discovered.
Game Design: Initially the android app was a re-creation of great gears, but in play testing the subjects would quickly loose interest. So levels were introduced to make it more discoverable and intuitive. The hand held ball bearing game relied on gravity and the player turning a small gear on the side to move things around. It felt natural to have things always moving, and not rely on gravity.
Stories: This game is a good ice breaker, it is simple enough for anyone to get sucked in, and takes about 5 minutes to finish. You can quickly learn more about a person by observing how they play. I have my current programming job because of sharing this game at a toastmasters training meeting.
It is also a good exercise in patients to not explain how to play. Unfortunately it is also an exercise in patients to observe those around you explaining to each other how to play. For me 90% of this puzzle is figuring out how to play it... and people like to share what they've learned... so the game commonly gets ruined. Several times my kids will be helpful and explain to others how to play it. Sadly I have lacked the patients to allow the game to get ruined, and would lash out to stop them.
