Color Racer

Two player race to slide all blocks to a matching square. Install here.

How to play: Tap a box next to an empty cell to push it into the empty cell. Try pushing the entire row or column to go faster.

Why: Rubiks Race is loads of fun, and I love making multiple player games.

Game Design: Keep it super simple to support the off screen player interaction. The original board game has an off board solution that both players refer to. For digital it felt right to incorporate the goal within the board, providing a target color in the border. It also felt fun to add some other toys like white out, and the scrambler. My nephew is color blind, so I added the pattern option. Starting positions are identical. A player can boost their difficulty to even out the match.

Story: Early play testing had a bug where multi touch was not supported. If player A was holding down their touch contact then the other player was blocked. At first I was sad to see the issue, then I saw how they were laughing to block the other player from doing anything. That inspired me to add battle attacks to white out the board, block all movement and send randomness.

UI Design: At first the weapons and config buttons were always visible, but this seemed like a distraction, and the players would accidentally open config or use a weapon. Now the config is opened by tapping in the center, and then tapping on both of the blue dots. The weapons become visible after tapping in the blank area off to the side. In normal game play only the play field is visible.
