Job Shadow Experience

Unified PREMIER Womens CARE, DR. STREET, FEBUARY 11TH, 2022

I job shadowed at Unified Premier Women’s Care in Marietta, Ga on February 11th. I was allowed to do this because my mom is the office manager. The patients here are mostly women, sometimes men if the significant other needs his bloodwork. I shadowed some medical assistants, one of the OGBYNs and the front office manager. The medical assistants give patients messages, call the patients with their results, schedule the doctor they help and float and room the patients. The doctors or OBs who work there do ultrasounds, Pap smears, screening tests, stool tests, etc. They see patients who have UTIs as well. I chose to shadow here because I hope to pursue a career working with women and/or children.

This is a private organization, with a very secure space because of the information they hold. The people who work here are profoundly serious when needed but laid back all together. There are a mixture of MAs and people who just take phone calls all day and the office is diverse to an extent. This office/practice is extremely hard to get into and the OBGYNs who work here see and deliver their own patients. They are extremely independent and by themselves. The OGBYN is shadowed went to school for 12 years: 4 in college. 4 in graduate school and 4 years of residency. She is very experienced and has delivered thousands of babies, including about 35, in one month. Basic high school education is needed, some have other degrees and hold various positions. This office does not do RNs or LPNs. I do like this work environment; it was defiantly an experience and I like it because its private and specializes in women and children.

The medical assistant's day starts at 8 am. They usually get there around 7:30 and end around 5, making sure the patients' rooms are cleaned and their rooms have everything they need. The OGBYNs get there around 9;30 and their end times vary because of how busy they are. Breaks are usually taken around 12 and they aren’t assigned. I saw a Pap smear being done and a stool test. I wasn’t expecting that to be honest and was blown away. Pap smears are to check for cervical cancer and HPV and stool tests check your blood. I learned a lot from the MA and the equipment I wasn’t familiar with, I made sure to ask. Speculums comes in several types and the pediatric ones are used for virgins or for people who are no longer active. Menopause is between the ages of 51 and 52 and Mangram's start at the age 45. I can go on and on about the information I learned about women care, it was remarkably interesting.

Not only did I observe and learn about Pap smears and stool tests, but I also learned that bloodwork is done to check for HIV, Herpes and Syphilis. Did you know that there are two types of yeast infections? Neither did I. I cannot say that it wasn’t what I was expecting because I didn’t know what to expect. If I chose to work here, it would be as an MA who just staring out in the medical field or OBGYN. I genuinely want to work in Pediatrics, so this isn’t my first choice. I could see myself working as an OBGYN here but not in school for 12 years and I would recommend shadowing one of the OBs or Medical Assistants at this office because you can learn and experience a lot. I enjoyed my time there.
