Career Consulation

Tracey-Ann Harriot- Family Nurse Practitioner

I did my Career Consultation Interview on a Family Nurse Practitioner, and I am blown away to be honest. I did not know what to expect, being that I originally wanted to interview a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, but I then learned they were similar. Right out the gate I asked how many years of school it took to be what she is, and I was shocked when she said 3 after nursing school. I already knew that you had to be an RN first and then she continued to tell me that she had to get her masters as well. The Nurse Practitioner side has more authority and with the certifications she gained, she can teach classes as well as own her own practice. What really struck me was that Family Nurse Practitioners can work with their patients from the time they are in the womb until they pass away and that was the major thing for me because I have always wanted to work with babies and their mothers and now to know that I can watch them grow up and mature is very exciting. She loves her job and her motivation to never give up as hard as times get was her kids and knowing that she would not want to do anything else. Yes, boards and your exams can be hard and being this kind of nurse practitioner comes with a lot of advanced courses and exams but if it is something I really want to pursue in, I am going to pursue it. The tip she gave me was to stay on top of things and to not doubt myself or get discouraged. Numbers do not matter, the amount of people in the class does not matter. I am here to pursue in the medical field, and I am excited to see what the future holds for me. I know times are going to get hard but since I want it, I know I am going to succeed in it. Overall, the interview was amazing, and I can see myself being in this career. Although I am interning at Physio, which is a physical therapy's office, I am still getting experience in the medical field. Since I want to double minor in Sports Management and Kinesiology, interning here allows me to get a glimpse on how to work and treat patients especially athletes.
