The Restoring Lost Voices Project sponsored by the Funk Heritage Center at Reinhardt University is an effort to expand the preservation and sharing of the history of Cherokee County and the Appalachian region. The African American Voices of Cherokee County site seeks to disseminate the story of Cherokee County's historically African American neighborhoods and residents. The project also documents the challenges and celebrations of Cherokee County throughout the navigation of complex racial relations similar to those experienced all across the United States. The site contains digitized artifacts, archival information, and oral histories organized by subject.Â
This project was made possible with support from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), Social Science Research Council, Reinhardt University, and Funk Heritage Museum Center staff. We extend our deepest gratitude to the individuals and institutions that aided us in the collection of information. We honor those who have transitioned, yet their service, leadership, and contributions helped to found and sustain the historically African American communities of Cherokee County. Thank you for visiting!
