The Hickory Log Baptist Church was established in 1872 by Philip Keith and his uncle Dave Keith. Both were formerly enslaved laborers, on the Keith plantation. Once freed, Philip Keith donated two acres of land which housed the church and a cemetery. Initial worship services took place in a log cabin and later a building located on Elmwood Street by the Hickory Log cemetery. The building was reconstructed in 1957, under the leadership of Rev. Robert Ralph Freeman Sr. who remained the pastor of the church until his transition in 2021.
