Upon the abolishment of enslavement, formerly enslaved families united together in the founding of communities for African Americans in Waleska, Canton, and Woodstock, GA. Families such as the Keiths, Bates, Watts, McMickens, and many others worked to construct the physical buildings and spirit that would characterize the Pearidge, Nineteen, and Stumptown communities. African American families expelled from nearby cities and Forsyth County were able to seek refuge and safety in these newly established neighborhoods. They have provided the county's African American residents with places of education and worship. Furthermore, these communities have nurtured local heroes and achievers. The following page examines local sites of history and community centers located within the Pearidge, Nineteen, and Stumptown communities.Â
