THEME Adaptation and Survival

Central Idea - LIVING BEINGS ADAPT IN ORDER TO SURVIVE

Driving Question : How do living beings adapt in order to survive.

Tuning In

We started our provocation with an amazing fact and a question

Do you know that birds and dinosaurs belong to the same family? Why birds are the only surviving Dinosaurs?

We observed some pictures of birds and animals and made inferences about how animals and birds survive in their environment and filled the given visible thinking routine . We completed the KWHL chart towards the end of the unit as and when we researched and found the answers to our questions.

We observed different pictures and shared our perspective about the same.

Adaptation Research (1)

We read various books on adaptation to find out more about the theme.

We were able to see the world from a horse’s point of view through our Novel Study – Black Beauty

Our focused research on different animals and their adaptations helped us to build on our understanding of the bigger idea of this unit of inquiry.

हमने जीव-जंतुओं के नज़रिये को समझा और और उनकी ज़िंदगी से जुड़ने कोशिश की |

In Math, we have been introduced to Skip counting of 2, 3 & 4 for numbers up to 100. We find out about questions like, 'Can the number catcher of 3 catch number 54?' We thought, reasoned out and counted in skips on the ganit mala using number catchers to find the solution. We are making connections between numbers & observing different patterns in numbers while counting in skips on the ganit mala.

We also made observations in math classes by observing trees in our surroundings! We found out about the trees around us, observed them from our houses, some of us brought the leaves to the classroom. We estimated the length of the leaves, compared them and also measured leaves of various types of trees! We observed how patterns & structures changed in leaves of different types of trees.

Sorting Out

We conducted various experiments to understand and make connections with the unique adaptations of different animals. Seeing how Penguins stay dry in water and doing the colour changing experiment of the Chameleon was great fun!

We discussed about different characters from the novel and how they were adapting to change in their life. We also did a visible thinking routine of Step Inside to understand how the animal observes, feel and care about things.

'Step Inside' - Visible Thinking Routine

We did 'Step Inside' Visible Thinking Routine for the life of Ginger from Black Beauty

We had discussions and did quizzes about adaptations like Mimicry, Hibernation and Migrations which helped us to deepen our understanding of the concept.

A session by ‘The Habitats Trust’ was conducted by a wildlife expert Ms. Vaishali Rawat which focused on natural habitats, the lesser known wildlife that survives in them and their various adaptations.

We explored the concept of perspective further in mathematics by making figures using shapes in different orientations.

We understood that there could be many ways to solve a problem. We helped Revathi by showing her ways to reach from one house number to another to deliver the courier parcels. In the process, we started looking at effective ways to solve a problem too.

We were able to identify the importance of butterflies in our ecosystem and why they are getting extinct in city habitats. We reflected on how our actions can help to bring them back to our cities.

Black Beauty

By reading Black Beauty, we were able to analyze different characters, made connections, and learned about multiple points of view and it helped us to write our autobiography when we followed the visible thinking routine of 'Step Inside' the character of an animal.

In Math, we found out about different trees in our neighbourhood & felt responsible towards growing & nurturing more trees. We worked on making suggestions for selecting tree saplings as available under a scheme by the forest department & government nursery for our societies.

a) We created our own imaginary animal and shared its adaptation and how these adaptations help them to survive in its natural habitat.

b) We wrote the autobiography of our imaginary animal, made connections and shared our one day adventure by looking at our routine through that animal’s perspective.

c) We presented our understanding of the novel Black Beauty by using any two activities of our choice from the given Choice Board. By being able to choose activities of our choice helped us to be more motivated and give our best in the given task.

d) After reading Black Beauty we thought it was our responsibility to take care of the animals and their habitats . We made posters to bring awareness about protecting the animals against any kind of torture.
