What is an SBLAT?
The School Based Language Assessment Team (SBLAT) is a placement and reclassification team charged with reviewing relevant data and making instructional and program decisions for students identified as emergent bilinguals or former English Learners.
At an SBLAT meeting, a team of teachers, guidance counselors, and administrators discusses the language domain-specific strengths and weaknesses of an emergent bilingual or Former English Learner, and whether the student is not making grade level academic progress due to language proficiency. (This meeting needs to happen before any special education referral takes place.) If the outcome of the meeting is that the student needs more language support, the team will write an Action Plan.
There is an SBLAT Meeting Request Form that needs to be completed. It is available further down on this page. Teams and/or teachers request an SBLAT meeting for different reasons, including: ESL level or program placement questions, special education concerns, setting up a classroom consult, and more.
The SBLAT information has now become embedded in the MTSS Solution Seeking Process, so that is the form we are now using (here to the left.) A copy of this form will be made by Mark Spillane or Megan Quinlan for each student.
