Project Development Update #2
On Tuesday of week 9 of October 17 - 21, I presented my slideshow presentation to all three IT classes at my previous high school. Following this, on Thursday of week 9, I came back to school to help students complete the interactive assignment I gave them. There was a whole lot that went into developing and executing this idea, all of which certainly led to a solid platform for change. I do believe this was a success as all of the students in the three classes of 10-20 students remained engaged throughout my presentation. They also seemed very excited to create their assignment and make something unique using the rules and features I gave them.
Beginning with the presentations I gave on Tuesday, I definitely feel as though they were successful in working to achieve my goal. To reiterate, my goal for this change in a community was to teach students of my previous high school about the possibilities and importance of slideshow presentations. The development of my slideshow presentation went well, and I feel as though I was able to develop it in the way I needed. I developed it into two main parts, the presentation with rules for a proper slideshow presentation and the assignment with a demonstration. In other words, the more general theoretical part and the more in-depth practical part. The presentation served to give students an idea of rules that they needed to be aware of. I used the assignment to allow students to apply these rules and concepts to an actual working product. The idea behind this was to hopefully commit the information to memory and give them an opportunity to really see the potential of slideshows and Google Slides. To build on the rules, I gave a demonstration which was meant to show students actual techniques for creating slideshows. This was meant to work hand-and-hand with the assignment as it provided students concepts most weren’t aware of. The students in all of the classes appeared to be very impressed with all of the features I demonstrated. I also gave the students a small survey to help determine how they felt after my presentation. Before presenting I was a little nervous, as presenting presentations is often out of my comfort zone. Though, when I got to my old high school and began my first presentation, I felt like I never had before. I believe that due to my passion for slideshow presentations, I was able to jump out of my comfort zone and present with confidence. Before this, I never really felt like I had this confidence and I think I was able to represent the proper way to present. The first two presentations were the best, and in the third I began to run out of steam just a little. Though, I am proud that I pushed myself into never giving up and doing something like this. I noticed that most if not all of the students in the class seemed very engaged throughout the presentation and demonstration. On Thursday, I went back to assist students with their assignments and help them submit their slideshows. I wanted to be there in the case that students saw me do something specific and were unable to replicate it. In each class a few students asked for help, which really showed me that they were interested and wanted to produce a good product. I noticed that pretty much all of the slideshow students were being really creative and displaying effort in making proper slideshows. I really feel like I have inspired these students, as now they’re aware of the possibilities of slideshow presentations. Now that the execution is complete, I don’t believe there is too much I would want to improve about my project. I feel as though I executed to the best of my ability and brought change to a community that I felt needed it. I demonstrated that Google Slides and slideshow presentations in general have many tools that are powerful when used in a creative way. I believe that now that students know of this valuable knowledge, they will be able to reference it, and use it in the future. Now, I can’t wait to compile all of these students' assignments to show their interest and effort in creating slideshows!
