As a current Early Childhood Educational Assistant and a former Nanny for nine uniquely different children, in four uniquely different families, I have encountered my fair share of challenging behaviours. However, it is the challenge that excites me and makes me passionate about my work. As a hopeful future foster parent, I decided to compile a list of activities, products and resources that have inspired me to understand and analyze behaviour in children differently, as well as, several tools I have personally found to have great success when implementing them with children I have worked with. It is now all in one easily accessible place for current foster parents to consider or for future foster parents like me.
Many foster parents do not have an educational background in early childhood development or experience in childcare, they simply have room in their home and in their heart. Fostering Healthy Behaviours was designed with the everyday foster parent in mind- No Experience Necessary!
The resources found on this site focus on providing information about how to first assess and then address certain behaviours you may encounter with children that come into your care. This sites focus is on early childhood development and children primarily between the ages of 4 to 12, however many principles and techniques can be applied to both younger and older age groups as well.
First, visit the Understanding section where you will find information on, understanding behaviours, trauma and loss, as well as, emotions and feelings.
Then, move on to the Tools & Strategies section, where you will find resources on positive discipline, coping strategies and self-regulation techniques.
I have also included a DIY Corner where you will find recipes and easy Do-It-Yourself projects that you can create on your own or with your foster children.
If you are looking to add some valuable resources to your book collection, you can also visit The Book Nook, where I have put together a list of books, for both children and adults, that I have read or that come highly recommended by those working in foster care.
