Acts 14:8-20, 16:1-2
Paul and Barnabas visited Lystra on their first missionary journey. It was at Lystra that Barnabas and Paul were mistaken for the Greek gods Zeus and Hermes, respectively. Paul was identified as Hermes because he did most of the talking: Hermes was the "messenger of the gods".
Paul and Barnabas fled Lystra, for Derbe, after the Jews of the synagogue turned on Paul, stoned him and left him for dead.
Paul visited Lystra again, with Silas, on the "Second Missionary Journey" as they travelled over land from Syrian Antioch, strengthening the churches (Acts 15:41) that Paul and Barnabas had founded earlier. It was at Lystra that Paul was first introduced to Timothy and had him 'join the team'.
All that is to be seen of Lystra today is an unexcavated mound, just north of the modern village of Hatunsaray. I visited Lystra in 2012, driving a rental car on a day trip from Konya.
Click here for a Google Earth view of the mound of Lystra.
The unexcavated mound is an exercise in "being there".
When I visited, the grass was long and I was not sure about the local snake population: I didn't climb to the top!
