Education is a cherished gift in Uganda. Even though there is public education, everyone is required to pay school fees and if a child can’t pay they are sent home. This is a problem for many families who are subsistent farmers, single mothers or orphaned children. For many young children, school is too far away to walk.
Due to the challenges that exist in a developing country, the Wesleyan Church of Uganda has helped its people meet these challenges head-on. Pastors are trained through the Wesleyan Bible Institute, many children are educated through church supported primary schools, and the development of a technical institute is taking place in one of the poorest districts. Lives are being transformed because of the dedication of so many.
Seeing the number of children who aren’t in school, pastors have started primary classes in their churches. Developing classroom space, paying teachers, and feeding the children has proven to be a huge task. We are seeking to assist them towards improving their facilities and teacher support. We are indebted to individuals and groups who have taken up the challenge of helping these village schools. Once students have completed primary 7 and pass the national exam, they can go on for further education.

One option following primary school or secondary school is to attend a vocational or technical school, where students learn skills that gives them the ability for employment. Because there are so many young people with little training, Bishop Lucas Hamirie envisioned opening a technical school to equip many more young people to give them hope for their future. FOCUS On Uganda caught the vision and raised enough money to begin the planning and development.
Property was purchased in the Namayingo District and in January 2023 construction began on the Wesleyan Technical Institute Namayingo. This institute will be focused on Christian values that equip both men and women in income producing skills. Changing the future of Uganda and particularly the younger generation will depend on our help in giving them the opportunity to use the gifts and graces God has poured into their lives. Giving them hope for their future is a life-giving opportunity.
