Agriculture in Uganda
Uganda has the climate that is conducive for great crop production, however most subsistence farmers can hardly grow enough to feed their families. Diets are also lacking in proper nutrition because of lack of training. Chickens abound but eggs are sold instead of giving this valuable protein to their children.
Short term courses offered at the Technical Institute will help participants grow crops for greater yield and also teach the nutritional value of the many native fruits and vegetables they can grow. Donate to help buy seeds, chickens, or sponsor a term at the Technical Institute.

Deforestation
The elimination of trees from the landscape has had a very negative impact on the environment. Trees have been cut regularly around the villages in rural Uganda for cooking, making charcoal, and building huts. FOCUS On Uganda is encouraging all congregations to have their members plant tree seedlings to help restore the landscape. Fruit trees, such as avocado, mango and jackfruit, can be grown to provide not only shade but significant nutrition. Purchasing and distributing tree seedlings is another way of blessing local congregations.

Biogas System
Biogas systems have been used in many countries for years but only recently have been introduced to Uganda. The digester is a tank that is built to receive the excrement from animals or humans. As the excrements decompose in this air tight chamber, methane gas is produced. This gas can be used for cooking or lighting. Cooking is much faster and cleaner with the methane gas burner and protects the respiratory health of the cooks. As the pressure increases the discharge from the tank is pushed out and can be used as a safe fertilizer for crops. Several digesters are now being used at the primary school and the orphanage in Busia.
Home biogas systems would not only help the air pollution caused by wood fires, but would greatly reduce the cutting of trees, something that has affected their whole environment.
