Season Part 0: Summer Camp

Step 1: Promotion

In order to get students to camp they have to know that it exists. We start promotion in March for our summer camp. We host our camp usually within the first two weeks after school is let out. We have changed our camp over the years for a variety of reasons:

  • We continue to adapt the camp as we learn what works and what does not work.
  • We have shifted the focus of the camp to more robotic based as this is what students are really coming for in the summer
  • In years past we have had students work in teams to do a research presentation based on a topic we create based on the upcoming theme.
  • We have operated camp in 70 - 90 minute chunks of time running two sessions for 9 days
  • We have also run camp for one week for 3 hours chunks(we like this method better)
  • Every single year we develop new challenges to make sure our repeat students don't repeat any challenges.

Step 2: Information

We always host an information meeting making sure that everyone knows what we are attempting to do with camp. We make it clear that we are not only hosting a camp to have fun and teach coding, but we are observing students to select our teams as well. If you don't come to camp, then you cannot be a Robodog. If you were a Robodog one year you are not guaranteed a spot. We have cut Robodogs who have been with us for 1-2 years if we don't see improvement in skills, leadership, and development as a person.

Here is our page from 2015 camp so you can see how we promote and handle registration http://coffeeforthebrain.com/robodogs/
