The most important as well as the most difficult to manage at times. Stick with it because it will pay off!
We host several nights where we invite parents in to experience practice. This allows parents to understand what we are working on to provide further conversation at home while at the same time providing students a chance to work on their communication skills.
We try to get our students in front of as many groups of people as we can. Period.
We document everything. We take pictures and video of every interview, practice runs, field trips, etc. You never know what might be a valuable asset later in the journey.
As coaches we spend a majority of our time banging our heads against the wall. We must remember that we have done this now for a very long time, but for the kids this their first or second time. They must endure the ups and downs of learning and the process. We can guide, but everything must be the kids decisions. This is very hard to do, but is the essence of FIRST.
Speak to as many as you possibly can. The more the better. Online, in person, Skype, field trips, etc.
Often times in school we do research and projects to earn a grade. FLL is not this system. Many times the project lives on and continues beyond the season. If you are passionate and devoted your ideas can spark and inspire change well beyond the season.
