Walnut St through downtown Muncie had been plagued by ADA compliance issues for many years. Under the Tyler administration, large amounts of resources were poured into the downtown area, including but not limited to: CSO separation, construction of the ARC Hotel, two-way street conversions, and the crown jewel – the Walnut St Streetscape project. FlatLand was hired as lead consultant on the 3.5-million-dollar project, teaming up with IXOYE Engineering for the engineering. The project included separating the storm and sewer lines along Walnut St between Seymour and Main St, while creating a ‘unique streetscape’ that would set apart Walnut St. A curbless street design allows the entire streetscape from building front to building front to be utilized as a pedestrian venue, with the brick paver sidewalks and parking lanes elevating Walnut St to a first class downtown space.
