encouraging nature play and hands-on education

M.O.M.’s : signifying Motivate Our Minds, is an education center in Muncie Indiana focused on a wholistic approach to learning. With this in mind, we worked with Ball State students in the College of Architecture to build a backyard immersive learning setting for the center. Over several semesters, FLR worked with the students on the design and build aspects of the project. FlatLand also played an integral part in resolving water issues on the property. Several unique parts of the project included an outdoor lab with a pergola covering, a pollinator garden, and wooden creatures with creative benches. With restoration and recycling in mind, the project also used reclaimed wood for the bridge from the parking lot to the backyard space that travels across the marshy design for water management. The project coupled design and build, while creating a hands-on learning environment for many Ball State students to practice real-world application.
