A vision for over twenty years, the Kitselman Trailhead would be the last puzzle piece of connecting the White River Greenway to the Cardinal Greenway on the east end of town. In 2016, FlatLand was hired to manage the project, overseeing funds procurement, design, and construction. The world-renowned firm, Land Collective, was hired to design the trailhead and construction started in 2018. In conjunction with the construction of the trailhead, the Indiana Steel & Wire low-head dam was removed by FlatLand in 2019, creating a go-to destination for outdoor recreation enthusiasts. Coordination between the CGW, INDOT, US ACOE, Land Collective, MSD, City of Muncie, IDNR, & IDEM was facilitated by FlatLand, and necessary to complete the project.
Situated at as the eastern most entry into the Muncie community, this project site will continue to evolve. The next stages of the Kitselman trailhead include a large scale, metal “Muncie” sign that will be visible from State Route 32 for oncoming traffic, pedestrians, and recreationalists.
