This television commercial from the 1980s features arguably the most famous athlete to ever play any sport, Micheal Jordan. The advert is him showcasing his skills on the court while wearing Nike sneakers with an energetic soundtrack and includes Jordan performing insane dunks which he was known for at the time. The slogan "Just do it" appears at the end of the advert showcasing Nike's brand image of determination and perseverance.
The advert is a very smart way of using Michael Jordan's star power to create a sense of aspiration and inspire millions of children who all want to be like Mike. By showcasing his skills, people will then relate Nike with sponsoring and being involved with the best athletes in the world which would therefore increase their popularity and therefore their sales.
The advert taps into the American values of individualism, ambition, and achievement, appealing to people's desires to want to be successful in life. By associating its brand with a symbol of greatness and athleticism like Michael Jordan, Nike reinforces its image as a leader in the sports industry and gains a competitive advantage.
The reason why I selected this ad was that I am a big fan of Michael Jordan and his shoes so I wanted to know where it all started with him and Nike. The first advert that I saw was this advert so it intrigued me how much trust Nike had in him from such a young age knowing that he would become one of the best athletes ever.
