The overall discussions for the results of the both solutions (ethyl and isopropyl) were able to detect both absence and the presence of lipids in the 5 substances. Originally, this experiment was to test the presence of lipids in a substance with only the ethyl alcohol solution. But then, accidents happen and the researcher puts the isopropyl solution instead of the ethyl solution in each of the substances. And now, the researcher conducted an experiment which would like to compare the differences between ethyl and isopropyl solutions to test the presence of lipids using two different solutions.
Using the isopropyl solution on the five substances gives the results obtained by detecting the presence of lipids and also the absence of them. The results of this solution acquired that only the sunflower oil has its presence when the isopropyl solution has been added. Also, the vinegar and corn syrup detected its absence on lipids. On the other hand, the remaining two substances which are canola oil and coconut oil have not shown fully detected results for lipids. The result of this experimentation affects its substance with the added solution. This is due to the fact this alcohol also has a portion of its molecule that has no charges, and is nonpolar. When you mix this kind of alcohol with water, the latter's molecules make hydrogen bonds with the water molecules. That is why the results of detecting the substances’ lipids are not that accurate. (Lohner 2017).
Furthermore, using the ethanol solution on the five substances gives the results obtained by detecting the presence of lipids and also the absence of them. The results of this solution acquired that only the vinegar detected its absence on lipids. Vinegar is essentially a dilute solution of acetic (ethanoic) acid in water therefore, the sample vinegar does not contain any lipids. Moreover, the remaining four samples in the experimentation have detected its presence on lipids when the ethanol solution has been added to them. This means that the four substances contain an amount of lipids that is why it is detected as present.
In conclusion, the emulsion test is a chemical precipitation method used to determine the availability of lipids. The process involves suspending the sample in ethanol and allowing any lipids present to disintegrate (lipids are soluble in alcohols). After that, the liquid is decanted into water.
