Gabriela Alejandra Hernandez Figueroa is a Honduran child who the Fairfield National Honor Society began sponsoring and supporting in 2015 through the Unbound program.
We raise money that goes towards providing financial support for the basic necessities of life for Gabriela and her family.
Gabriela is very smart and likes going to school. Her favorite color is white. She helps her mother with cleaning the house and other chores. Gabriela, her mother, stepfather and younger sister are a very close family. They're very respectful and humble. They attend the Evangelical church together. The financial situation for Gabriela's family is very difficult. Weather changes have affected her stepfather's harvest of his corn and bean crops.

Since adopting Gabriela through the Unbound Program, Fairfield's National Honor Society has held fundraisers in conjunction with the Cincinnati Cyclones to support her education. Hockey fundraisers were held every year except 2020 when Covid 19 shut the world down.
Over the years, NHS officers and Gabriela have exchanged letters. The Fairfield chapter of the National Honor Society chose Gabriela in a direct response to the child immigrant crisis at the southern border of the United States. Members hoped to help at least one child directly.

Dear sponsor Fairfield,
Hello, it is a pleasure to greet you with much affection wishing you are in good
health. My family and I are in good health, thanks to God.
I also tell you that we are in the month of our country's Independence Day, but
we will not celebrate it in the same way we have done it years before with a
parade due to the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic so we are doing virtual
activities such as singing the National Anthem, folk dancing, and poetry, among
other activities. Furthermore, I am aware of all the school assignations which are
now virtual so that we won't lose the school year because we cannot go to school
due to the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic.
In my free time, I help my mother with the house chores such as doing errands
and some other things. How have you been dealing with this pandemic? I would
like to know how you are, and I hope you write tome soon so that I could hear
from your health; I hope you could send me a photo as well to meet you.
May God bless your life and keep you wherever you go; I hope you like my letter
since I wrote to you with much love. So long! I bid you farewell with much love
and affection.
Sincerely,
Gabriela

Dear sponsors at Fairfield H.S National,
Hello! It is lovely to greet you with so much love and affection, wishing you and
your family are in good health. I would like to tell you that I am in very good
health.
I would also like you to know that I had the best time with my relatives at
Christmas. I am very happy because the year 2020 is over, but the new year is
coming. School enrollment began in January, and I am very happy because we
are going to classes again. I hope they will not be virtual but face-to-face, as this
year I am going to the first year of high school. I am starting my high school
nursing career program to be able to achieve my dream of being a nurse. Thank
you for your help; my family and I are very grateful for your support as you are
helping me to fulfill my dream. So for, I thank you very much, and so does my
family.
I hope that you are very happy to get my letter because I write to you with a lot
of love and affection. I hope you tell me how your life is about your family as well.
I hope you write to me soon and send me a photo so that I can meet you. May
God bless your life and that of loved ones and protect you from all evil.
I bid farewell.
Love,
Gabriela
Dear Gabriella,
It is great hearing from you! We hope you and your family are doing well during these unprecedented times. We are all happy 2020 is over and we are looking forward to 2021. Speaking of looking forward to new opportunities, congratulations on beginning your first year of high school and beginning your nursing career program!
We hope you have been enjoying yourself and learning all kinds of new things. We are sure you will make a fantastic nurse someday! We have had a very strange school year ourselves; we go to school in-person on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, but we go to school virtually on Wednesdays - it is nice to have a break in the middle of the week!
Please feel free to let us know what your educational and career goals are as you continue your journey through your school’s nursing program. Also, let us know if you have any exciting upcoming events because we would love to hear about them!
To keep us busy during the pandemic, we have been reading, writing, exercising, practicing instruments, and watching our favorite TV shows and movies. What are some of your favorite hobbies?
Your country’s Independence Day celebrations sound so exciting! Here in the United States, our Independence Day festivities got canceled or looked very different as well. Our huge firework shows were limited capacity or shut down completely. We’re also glad you had an amazing Christmas with family! Do you have any favorite holiday traditions?
We attached a picture of ourselves! A little bit about us: Alena really enjoys playing in local wind ensembles and orchestras, being a drum major of the schools marching band, and getting ice cream with her friends. Kennedy is involved in various local orchestra programs, pre-law programs, class council, and the Big Brothers Big Sisters mentorship program to mentor elementary students. Victoria likes to sew and design various types of clothing and to draw and paint. Anie does a lot of community service projects, loves to run, play sports, and watch movies. Camilla likes to listen to music and make dance choreographies.
Thank you for always continuing to write to us; we love hearing from you. Even though we live hundreds of miles away, we feel as though these letters bring us closer.
Wishing the best to you and your family in this new year!
Cheers,
The Fairfield National Honor Society
