The mishoon was created by a team of Indigenous leaders and youth in partnership with The Wayside Inn staff. The project was truly a community effort, with many volunteers joining in to help along the way. Everyone listed below played a role in the success of the project.
Owner & Founder, Ockway Bay Wampum
Hartman has been active in environmental and cultural stewardship for over 20 years, based on his spiritual foundation in Native traditions that value the earth as a living being. Hartman has participated in ceremonies since the age of 12 and joined in Native ceremonies across the Americas over the past 30 years. He was a 2021 Cape Cod Modern House artist retreat resident and 2022 Massachusetts Cultural Council "traditional arts" fellow.
Hartman supervised the canoe-making process alongside Andre and a team of apprentices.
Creative Director, No Loose Braids
Andre serves as a cultural steward for his tribe and is a father, public speaker, traditional dancer, Indigenous activist, carpenter, and educator. With over a decade in recovery from drugs and alcohol, Andre is a recovery sponsor and integrated life coach for those in need. Andre's work focuses on bringing traditional knowledge back to Indigenous Peoples. Some of this consists of fleshing and brain-tanning hides to make items such as drums, buckskin, and blankets.
Andre supervised the canoe-making process alongside Hartman and a team of apprentices.
Lesley is an elder with the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe. As a former Vice President with U.S. Medical Company, she became interested in horticulture and, in particular, the healing properties of indigenous herbs and medicinal plants. A longtime advocate for Civil Rights, Human Rights, and environmental issues, Lesley is currently working on indigenous educational projects.
Lesley was the catalyst for this project. She facilitated the initial discussions and introduced TWIF staff to her nephew Hartman Deetz.
Former Education Coordinator, The Wayside Inn Foundation
Katina was hired in 2021 to design educational programs that engage a broader audience, including families and youth. Katina received a Ph.D. in Education from Lesley University in 2021. She is the former Director of the Heritage Studies Graduate Program and Museum Studies Certificate at Regis College and has taught a wide range of university-level courses in history and education throughout the Boston metro region. An active volunteer in the community, Katina is currently a Goodnow Library Trustee.
Katina organized portions of the project and oversaw many of the administrative details and marketing.
Director of Community Engagement, The Wayside Inn Foundation
Hired in October 2019, Sally was brought on board to strengthen the organization’s nonprofit identity, increase community engagement, and manage development activities. She holds an M.A. in Historic Preservation from Boston University and has 25 years of experience in historic preservation and museum management. Sally is an active community volunteer and currently serves on the boards of the Sudbury Chamber of Commerce, Freedom's Way National Heritage Area, and MetroWest Readers Fest.
Sally provided essential behind-the-scenes support and worked with local partners for in-kind donations of services.
Archivist and Digital Curator, The Wayside Inn Foundation
Lauren serves as The Wayside Inn's archivist. She was brought on to manage the Inn’s collections, digitize them, and make them more readily available to researchers and the public. She holds an M.A. in History from the University of Massachusetts Boston, with a focus on Public History & Archives. Lauren is the former Executive Director at the South End Historical Society in Boston. Currently, she also serves as the Manager of Collections & Interpretation at the Rotch-Jones-Duff House & Garden Museum in New Bedford, Massachusetts.
