Feeding the Fire

The Mishoon Project at The Wayside Inn

Project Mission

On Sunday, September 4, 2022, a fire was lit at The Wayside Inn Historic Site to create what would eventually become an 18' mishoon. The dugout canoe was made from a fresh pine log shaped through a process of monitored burning, using Indigenous techniques that span millennia.

Because of drought conditions in the area, the process took only six days, much less time than expected. Hundreds of visitors from near and far stopped by throughout the process to check on the canoe's progress and ask questions.

This website is a digital journal for sharing photos, videos, and reflections with the public.

This project was made possible by a grant from the Sudbury Foundation and in-kind donations of services from Lynch Landscape and Tree Service, Inc. and Rusty's Tree Service.
