Calvin "Cal" Petri is a United Federation Politician and Founding Father who served one term as the 13th President of the United Federation. He previously served as the Vice President under John Banks-George, and was the long-standing Senator for the State of Groom Lake. He was also the Secretary of the Navy in multiple administrations, and was the second openly gay President of the United Federation. He was the final Founding Father of the Federation to serve as it's president; a number of previous and all future presidents are not considered part of the Founding Fathers.
He is extremely well liked by many in the Sun Prairie Nations, and his election was the largest landslide vote in the history of the Federation since John Banks-George's first election. Petri won 94.7 percent of the vote when the election was called, and the magnitude of the victory was so large that the election was called with only 18 states calling in returns, with enough of the populous to guarantee a victory. Senator Petri had before lost a highly contested election against Carson Clumpner, who went on to become the 6th President of the UFP. After this he had initially decided that he wouldn't seek the Presidency again, however he was convinced to make a run again at the urging of many in the Federation's new generation, as well as many in the Establishment.
Following his election, Calvin Petri was sworn in on the 17th of January, completing the Transition of power which began with his Vice-President taking office, the sitting of the new Senate, and finally his inauguration. He was sworn in using former President John Banks-George's Bible, and the Constitution from Addison Boott. As he was being sworn in, the Second Centralia Canal Crisis was already occurring, and Petri called for restraint on all sides. However he also increased naval Deployments to the Centralia Canal region on the advice and actions of his Vice-President. He also deployed the carrier USS Kearsarge, and after the FWS Missouri continued on an intercept course, gave orders to fire on the Wisconsinite Ships. The Missouri turned back, as did the Federation Vessels.
The remainder of Petri's term was largely free of major international events. He spent much of this time shoring up the alliances the Federation had with Despa, the F.W.R., and New Washburn. He was one of the chief architects of the Allied Army, the combined military forces of New Washburn, the United Federation, and Despa, leading to the combined forces being the largest military in the SPN. He focussed heavily on Naval development, ordering the construction of four new supercarriers of the Anderson-class, and spent much of the Federal Budget on military.
At the end of his term, he opted not to run for a second term, and endorsed his Vice-President, Jacob Monday, for the position. During the election, the Federalist Candidate, Caden Schwartz, called him "The Founder of the Anti-Fed." The claim was largely ignored by most mainstream press in the Federation and was considered immediately false. Monday won the election, and his first sentence in his inaugural address was thanking President Petri for his service as the leader.
Senator Petri began his service to the Federation by joining during it's founding, and becoming a member of the First High Command of the Federation. As a member of the High Command he was a strong advocate for the establishment of a Navy, and later helped to create the S.S. Enterprize, the first sailing ship of the Federation.
During Ainsley Wall's second term he became the Secretary of the Navy, a position he held for the rest of her presidency, Ethan Moehr's Presidency, Chris Kukura, Vice President under John B.G.'s Second Term, and Naval Secretary for Carson Clumpner's presidency. During the Lapord Administration, he became the Secretary of the Air Force, and during the Fallis administration, he became the Secretary of the Guard Service. During the Boott and Anderson Administrations, he regained his role as Secretary of the Navy.
In early April of 2017, senator Petri ran for the "Summer Presidency," in an election that was famously divided between Prairie View and Patrick Marsh. However, due to the swing of New Illinois, Calvin lost the election.
The 2020 January Presidential Election was largely considered over as it began. Calvin Petri was within four days of his announcement winning 27 states, and by the week before the final election took place he held solid majorities in all 40 states.
In the election Senator Petri won 95% of the popular vote, and once 18 states, together constituting a large enough proportion of the population, the election was called.
