Charles Edward “Chuck” White was born in Seattle, WA to Eugene and Harriet White and raised in Lake Oswego, OR; he later graduated from Central Catholic High School in Portland in 1949. During his time there he became a member of the Oregon National Guard. Chuck then attended the U.S. Naval Academy and graduated and commissioned as an Ensign in 1953. At the Naval Academy, he was a member of the "Great Eight" crew team and a member of the 1952 Olympic Rowing team. Upon graduation Chuck served aboard the Harry E. Hubbard (DD748) until January 1956 when he commenced flight training in Pensacola, FL. On receiving his wings in 1957, he served in Patrol Squadron One (VP-1) flying P2V-5F and 7 aircraft for four years; Commander Fleet Air Whidbey for one year; and Pre-Flight School for four years. After refresher training in 1966, Chuck served two years with VP-4 flying P-3As and two years in OPNAV. Reporting to Fleet Air Wing One Detachment Agana, Guam in 1970; he completed his military career in 1973, retiring in Guam.
Chuck's first civilian employment was founding a Navy JROTC unit at Father Dueñas Memorial School, Guam, today known as Phoenix Company. He and his family returned to the continental U.S. in 1978 as his two oldest sons were graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy. After directing the NJROTC unit in Lodi, CA, Chuck became a logistics engineer working for Honeywell, Aerojet, Westinghouse, Litton, Logistics Systems Architects, General Dynamics, and TRW. He was awarded a Masters of Science in Systems Management from University of Southern California in 1982 and declared a Certified Professional Logistician (CPL) in 1989. After Sept 11, 2001, Chuck served with the Coast Guard Auxiliary in San Diego, CA for four years.
CDR Charles Edward "Chuck" White passed away May 4, 2010 in Pensacola, FL after a nearly two year battle with lung cancer. Chuck is survived by his wife, Betty Joanne White; six children, Mike, Kevin, Kathie, Sharon, Theresa, and Sean; 19 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Today, his legacy and tradition of excellence still lives on through the cadets of the Father Dueñas Memorial School Phoenix Company; with having been a Distinguished Unit for 20 straight years, Distinguished Unit with Academic Honors for 14 straight years, the #1 Unit in Area 13 in 1983, 2015, and 2022, and the #1 Unit in Area 23 in 2024. His legacy and contributions to Guam is seen by Phoenix Company continually making our island leaders, sending cadets to enlist in the military, enroll in various ROTC programs, or to attend the service academies; bringing honor to our island.
