- Defense jury
The PhD jury consists of:
a. The University Dean, which presides, or whoever he/she nominates. The supervisor(s) is (are) not eligible for this role;
b. Between four to six jury members who have a PhD degree.
Typically, the University Dean is represented by the president of the PhD candidate's department.
When designating the jury, the following rules have to be respected, to guarantee the impartiality predicted in the “Código de Procedimento Administrativo” (i.e. the Administrative Procedure Regulation):
a. Whenever there is more than one supervisor, only one can integrate the jury;
b. At least two of the jury members (other than the Dean or his/her representative) are professors or researchers with a PhD from other teaching or research institutions, national or international, making any external supervisor(s) ineligible;
c. The jury can also integrate individuals with acknowledged competence in the scientific field in which the thesis, or equivalent works, is inserted;
d. The jury must integrate at least three professors or researchers from the scientific field in the scientific field in which the thesis, or equivalent works, is inserted.
