Between submitting & defending
Up to 30 days after the PhD thesis is submitted, the University Dean nominates the defense jury, being the nomination dispatch published in a public location of the Faculty of Sciences and on the University of Lisbon web portal.
Up to 60 days after the jury is nominated, the president of the jury (usually the director of the department the candidate is affiliated to) asks each jury element if the thesis document is approved or if a reformulation of the document is recommended, justifying the decision. Unless there’s unanimity in this result, a meeting is scheduled by the jury director to discuss this issue.
If the document needs to be reformulated, the candidate has 120 days to do so or to declare that he/she intends to keep the document as is.
Up to 60 days after the thesis is accepted, the jury president must publish an edict stating the date for the PhD defense.
