Leroy and the Kid

Synopsis

Leroy's niece Tina shows up and causes trouble for him particularly when the producer of the show that he's putting together is more interested in Tina than what Leroy and the school has to offer.

Danny discovers there is another actor with the same name as him  and Chris and Holly can't agree on how to interpret Hamlet ready for the school show they are in.

Review

Leroy takes centre stage for the second episode in a row as the show continues to evolve his character from teenage student to adult faculty member. In the last episode he became a teacher and here he effectively becomes a parent to his previously unmentioned niece Tina.

It's unclear if the producers had forgotten Leroy's brother's name from season one is Willard or if Lamar is a third brother that again had previously not been mentioned.

Considering the strength of the opening episode of the season, this episode feels pretty weak to me. The Holly / Chris and the Danny subplots, whilst providing a little humour don't really have much substance. Considering Cynthia won't be around for much longer and gets very little to do in her remaining episodes, it would have been nice to give her a story with a little more substance.

Tina walks a fine line between being sassy and bratty and seems to polarize the audience with some liking her whilst others and at times it feels like the majority despise her. Personally, I don;t mind her but perhaps she could have been a little bit more toned down to make her more relatable.

When I first watched I didn't realise that Tina was going to become a semi regular character and it felt like the ending was just left a little up in the air.  It's clear that Leroy and Tina resolving their differences is only temporary, which was presumably the writers intention as they wanted the character to continue but it feels unsatisfying to me.

"Everyone has a road to go down" is pleasant enough but certainly not a classic for me.
