On Set Exteriors

In 1984 having filmed at the Julia Richman building in New York City the art directors built a street set and school entrance on the MGM lot, which would be the main set they used for outside scenes for the whole of the final three seasons, making it easier and cheaper to film outside scenes.

The original set was built at the end of season 3 and made to resemble the Bradbury building using the same shops either side of the entrance The cast picture above was taken at the end of season 3 as the cast said Goodbye to Executive Producer William Blinn. The originally set was never featured in any of the episodes. Having changed to using the Julia Richman building at the start of season the street set was adapted to look more like the real building with red doors and similar steps and removing the shops parts.

Strangely they kept the original School of the Arts sign that they'd made for the Bradbury Building even though they made a different one to fit the Julia Richman Building.

The whole outside Street was revamped a number of times to fit the purpose of the scripts, so different shops and restaurants appeared depending on the episodes.
