"This is a question that many people ask me. Eh, I think that require different attention. For me, I tell you now, that singing and playing, is something joyful, that brings happiness. The music, for those who play or for those who listen, always arouses strong emotions, it is as if your heart was big enough to keep everything ... I've been an actress for a long time, but I'm getting ready to play again ... and it's really exciting! We arrive at Fame! In the 80s you were the star of the hit television series Fame, and have played the sweet Doris Schwartz. How did you manage to join the cast?

"lived in Los Angeles at that time, and they were making the movie Fame Alan Parker directed.They were doing auditions for the part of Doris. I auditioned but did not get the part in the movie and I was very discouraged. It was Maureen Teefy to get the part. After that I moved to New York to replace an actor so I was a substitute on Broadway. But a year later, my agent called me and told me they were doing a television series of the movie Fame. At that time, in the halls, they were projecting just the midnight movie of 1980. I proposed at that time for all the actors who worked Broadway from 18:00 to 23:00, and therefore never had the time to view it .I went then to the movies at midnight with a friend and saw Lee Curreri who sat ahead ... and I began to think "I'll be your friend! Which episode did you like the most?

In the series you were a friend to all, but especially to Bruno Martelli (Lee Curreri) and Danny Amatullo (Carlo Imperato). It was so even off the set?

"Lee and I have been friends forever. We lived together, we shared a house when we did Fame ... we watched them grow. I consider Lee a musician before an actor. is an incredible musician and is very good. We traveled a lot together, we were good friends. Carlo is the classic brother with whom you argue, contrary to Lee, he is always very calm and peaceful.

Even with Carlo we care very much, but we are very similar, we are all two very impetuous. I recently saw Carlos, who also has children, in reality we are all parents. Cynthia Gibb and I are close friends, and every time I see Debbie Allen. When did the new movie Fame, in 2009, we were all invited to the presentation of the film, on this occasion I saw them all. And with Gene Anthony Ray (Leroy)?

"He was one of the most talented, was extraordinary. He had no training or dance or drama ... nothing! It was natural talent, with a big heart and was also very funny, had a great personality. How did you live those years? Many concerts, many fans. I remember the concert in Santa Monica in 1983, your duet with Carlo Imperato ... beautiful!

"Yes! I remember the concert in Santa Monica. We did not expect to do concerts. We were just doing a television series, we did not think of doing concerts in large auditoriums, and in places like Wembley Stadium in London or the Super Dome in Isreal. Locations with 50,000 seats. I loved playing gigs, it was very funny. The first concert was just in Santa Monica and we did not think of having to prepare Instead we learned in week three choreographies, songs, we had to record ... In a week we had to do it all!

So there was no improvisation in concert?

"No, almost all the concerts were dramas ... maybe just a little 'when talking to the public, but everything was scripted and structured."

There is still inside of you a part of that little Doris?

"There will always be Doris, because Doris is the best part of me. Doris was able to express the pain of my adolescence. I think that adolescence is a particular stage, because when you're young everyone is ready to give advice and opinions on everything; up to ten years everyone will leave to remain as you are, then comes the teenage years and everyone tells you "do not do this, do not do that"; at twenty purchases awareness of yourself and a desire to find yourself; to thirty ask people "what do you think of me?", forty years you begin to realize that everything revolves around you does not make sense if the center of your life, there are good values ​​and important;and so arrive at fifty and you're happy, you look and you're serene as you are, you do not need things that maybe they do not last at all, because you've picked up this wonderful values ​​that will never go away.

When I was 20 I thought I was fat, I did not like my body, I did not think to be beautiful. Now I look at those photos and think "who is this beautiful girl?".

Many young people in the world do nothing but think of the success: acting, presenting, singing ... but often the company is indifferent to their problems and what they really want. How do you then to be strong?

"teaching acting, stimulating the young actors, I noticed that often, there are people who let themselves go, which are full of fears and insecurities. This often leads to be false with others, with people, and to have a series of masks. If you have skill, talent, coupled with sincerity, you can touch the hearts of the people ... we should not stand for what you are not. Look, if I cut my hand with a knife, and do the same to you the blood that comes out is the same, and so is for the Muslim, Catholic, black, white ... we are all equal. There must be social scales, but only a good talent and humility. "

MyWhere is an example of a beautiful and youthful new reality, a post-modern diary facing the world today and I have the pleasure and good fortune to meet a real model of talent and tenacity, what else do you want to say to our readers? Do you have future plans?

'I directed a few movies and now I have a film project in Serbia. For five years I worked on a film "Offering Compromise", and I was hired to direct it. Then my cousin wrote a play, a story of a family ... but he never finished, so I decided to direct it myself with a small initial budget, and now you're working in the processing of the script. The originality of this film work is that it will be a work that will be funded through a collection agency funds, where anyone can contribute and become a participant in the creation of this project. The film tells the story of a family with its joys, but especially with its financial difficulties, and this will be seen through the eyes of an eighteen year old. So it's a good job that there are important links, united, however, the economic difficulties of life. We will announce all through social networks ... ".

Non avrei mai immaginato, che nel giorno del mio compleanno, avrei trascorso un intenso pomeriggio con un celebre personaggio tv, e di cui ho sempre sperato di incontrare. Eh già! Come ogni favola che si rispetti, il mio sogno viene realizzato: lo scorso 19 Luglio in una piovigginosa giornata romana, tra le stradine strette, tra quella cromaticità architettonica del bianco dorato travertino e il rosso mattone del laterizio, dai loggiati sempre infiorati… io mi appresto a bussare alla porta di Valerie Landsburg nota al gran pubblico per la sua brillante interpretazione nel ruolo di Doris Schwartz nella fortunatissima serie televisiva Fame-Saranno Famosi. Valerie ha aperto le sue porte a MyWhere con assoluta disponibilità, regalandomi così affetto e calorosità…come se mi conoscesse da tempo.

Cantante, cantautrice, attrice, regista, una vera forza della natura. Ma quale preferisci fra tutte queste professioni?

“Questo è una domanda che mi chiedono in molti. Eh, credo che richiedano attenzione diversa. Per me, ti dico adesso, che cantare e suonare, è un qualcosa di gioioso, che porta felicità. La musica, per chi la suona o per chi l’ascolta, suscita sempre forti emozioni, è come se il tuo cuore fosse abbastanza grande per mantenere tutto… Non ho fatto l’attrice per molto tempo, però mi sto preparando a recitare di nuovo… ed è davvero eccitante! Quando avevo 24 anni sono stata molto famosa, e il regalo più grande è stato poter recitare, mentre la gente si affezionava al mio personaggio: sono contenta di averli resi felici. Sicuramente il lavoro da regista è molto difficile. Certo, quando si gira può essere divertente, ma gli anni di preparazione e organizzazione…sono davvero faticosi! Amo anche scrivere, credo che sia molto appagante e soddisfacente: quando scrivo sono io e basta, mentre quando reciti o dirigi un film c’è sempre qualcuno che dice “questo o quello non mi piace”.

Arriviamo a Fame! Negli anni’80 sei stata la protagonista della fortunata serie televisiva Fame e hai interpretato il ruolo della dolce Doris Schwartz. Come sei riuscita ad entrare nel cast?

“Vivevo a Los Angeles a quel tempo, e stavano facendo il film di Fame che Alan Parker ha diretto. Stavano facendo le audizioni per la parte di Doris. Feci il provino ma non ottenni la parte nel film e rimasi molto scoraggiata. Fu Maureen Teefy ad ottenere la parte. Dopo di che mi trasferii a New York per sostituire un attore: quindi ero una sostituta a Broadway. Ma un anno dopo il mio agente mi chiamò e mi disse che stavano facendo una serie televisiva del film Fame. In quel periodo, nelle sale, stavano proiettando a mezzanotte proprio il film del 1980. Lo proponevano a quell’ora per tutti gli attori di Broadway che lavoravano dalle 18:00 alle 23:00, e che quindi non avevano mai il tempo di vederlo. Andai, quindi, al cinema a mezzanotte con una amica e vidi Lee Curreri che sedeva più avanti…e iniziai a pensare “sarò sua amica! sarò sua amica!” più guardavo il film e più pensavo a questo “Noi saremo amici! Noi saremo amici!”. E un anno dopo l’audizione, per la prima puntata pilota della serie, ottenni la parte. Altre due attrici si presentarono ai provini per il ruolo di Doris: Fran Drescher e Jennifer Grey. Quando conobbi Lee diventammo subito amici e traslocammo ad Hollywood per girare la serie.

Quale episodio ti è piaciuto di più?

“Sicuramente Il Mago di Oz fu un grande regalo per me, lo guardo ancora….ed è molto divertente. Interessante anche quello sull’anoressia: per quell’episodio io fui la regista. Un altro episodio quello di Cappuccetto Rosso, o anche quello con il fantasma… ma certamente Il Mago di Oz rimane tra quelli che preferisco di più in assoluto.”

Nella serie tu eri amica di tutti, ma in modo particolare a Bruno Martelli (Lee Curreri) e Danny Amatullo (Carlo Imperato). Era così anche fuori dal set?

“Lee ed io siamo amici da sempre. Abbiamo vissuto insieme, abbiamo condiviso una casa quando abbiamo fatto Fame… ci siamo visti crescere. Considero Lee un musicista ancor prima di un attore. é un musicista incredibile ed è bravissimo. Abbiamo viaggiato molto insieme, siamo rimasti buoni amici. Carlo è il classico fratello con cui litighi, al contrario di Lee, lui è sempre molto calmo e pacato.

Anche con Carlo ci vogliamo molto bene, ma siamo molto simili, siamo tutte due molto impetuosi. Ho visto recentemente Carlo, anche lui ha figli, in realtà siamo tutti genitori. Cynthia Gibb ed io siamo amiche strette, e vedo ogni tanto anche Debbie Allen. Quando fecero nuovo film di Fame, nel 2009, fummo tutti invitati alla presentazione del film, in quest’occasione rividi tutti. Sono molto amica anche con Carol Mayo Jenkins: faceva il ruolo della maestra, ho legami anche con alcune delle persone venuti più tardi e quelli che c’erano nella prima serie “

E con Gene Anthony Ray (Leroy)?

“Era uno dei più talentuosi, era straordinario. Non aveva nessuna formazione né di danza, né di recitazione…niente! Era talento naturale, con un grande cuore ed era anche molto divertente, aveva una grande personalità. Eravamo amici, ma se eri amico di Jean, lo dovevi essere dentro e fuori dalla tua vita. Spariva e appariva all’improvviso…. Una volta la BBC venne a fare un concerto con noi, e venne anche lui, c’era tutto il cast al completo quel giorno, e quella fu l’ultima volta che lo vidi prima della sua morte”.

Come hai vissuto quegli anni? Molti concerti, molti fans. Io ricordo il concerto di Santa Monica nel 1983, il tuo duetto con Carlo Imperato…bellissimo!

“Si! Ricordo il concerto a Santa Monica. Non ci aspettavamo di fare concerti. Stavamo solo facendo una serie televisiva, non pensavamo di fare concerti in grandi auditori e in posti come Wembley Stadium a Londra o il Super Dome in Isreale. Sedi con 50.000 posti. Io amavo fare concerti, era molto divertente. Il primo concerto è stato proprio a Santa Monica e non pensavamo di doverci preparare: invece in una settimana abbiamo imparato tre coreografie, le canzoni, dovevamo registrare… In una settimana abbiamo dovuto fare tutto!

Quindi non c’era improvvisazione nei concerti?

“No, quasi tutti i concerti erano sceneggiati…forse solo un po’ quando si parlava col pubblico, ma tutto era sceneggiato e strutturato”.

C’è ancora dentro di te una parte di quella piccola Doris?

“Ci sarà sempre Doris, perché Doris è le miglior parte di me. Doris era capace di esprimere il dolore della mia adolescenza. Penso che l’adolescenza sia una fase particolare, perché quando sei giovane tutti sono pronti a darti consigli e pareri su qualsiasi cosa; fino a dieci anni tutti ti lasciano rimanere come sei, poi arriva l’adolescenza e ognuno ti dice ”non fare questo, non fare quello”; a vent’anni acquisti consapevolezza di te stessa e un voglia di scoprirti; a trent’anni chiedi alle persone “che ne pensi di me?” , a quarant’anni inizi a capire che tutto ciò che ti ruota intorno non ha senso se al centro della tua vita non ci sono valori sani e importanti; e così arrivi a cinquant’anni e sei felice, ti guardi e sei serena di come sei, non hai bisogno di cose che magari non durano niente, questo perché hai raccolto valori stupendi che non andranno mai via.

Quando avevo 20 anni pensavo di essere grassa, non mi piaceva il mio corpo, non pensavo di essere bella. Ora guardo quelle foto e penso “chi è questa bella ragazza?”.

Molti giovani nel mondo non fanno altro che pensare al successo: recitare, presentare, cantare…ma spesso la società è indifferente ai loro problemi e a ciò che vogliono veramente. Come si fa allora ad essere forti?

“Insegnando recitazione, stimolando i giovani attori, ho notato che spesso, ci sono persone che si lasciano andare, che sono piene di paure e insicurezze. Questo porta spesso ad essere falsi con gli altri, con la gente, e ad avere una serie di maschere. Se hai abilità, talento, unita alla sincerità, riesci a toccare il cuore della gente…non bisogna presentarsi per ciò che non si è. Guarda, se mi tagliano la mano con un coltello, e fanno lo stesso anche a te il sangue che fuori esce è uguale, ed è così per il musulmano, il cattolico, il nero, il bianco…siamo tutti uguali. Non ci devono essere scale sociali, ma solo un buon talento e umiltà”.

MyWhere è un esempio di una bella realtà nuova e giovanile, un diario post-moderno che si affaccia sul mondo e oggi io ho il piacere e la fortuna di incontrare un reale modello di talento e tenacia, cos’altro vuoi dire ai nostri lettori? Hai progetti futuri?

“Ho diretto alcuni film ed ora ho in serbo un progetto cinematografico. Per cinque anni ho lavorato ad un film “Offrendo Compromesso”, e sono stata assunta per dirigerlo. Poi mio cugino ha scritto uno spettacolo, una storia di una famiglia…ma non l’ha mai finito, allora ho pensato di dirigerlo io con un piccolo budget iniziale, ed ora si sta lavorando nella lavorazione del copione. L’originalità di questo lavoro cinematografico, è che sarà un lavoro che verrà finanziato attraverso un’agenzia di raccolta fondi, dove chiunque potrà contribuire e rendersi partecipe nella creazione di questo progetto. Il film narra la storia di una famiglia con le sue gioie, ma soprattutto con le sue difficoltà finanziarie, e questo sarà visto con gli occhi di un diciottenne. Quindi è un bel lavoro in cui ci sono legami importanti, uniti però alle difficoltà economiche della vita. Annunceremo tutto tramite i social network…”.
