Reflection or Comment on Course Field Notes.
My knowledge of Artificial Intelligence was quite minimal prior to this course. My initial impression of AI was linked to chatbots and some basic automatic processes. Yet, there are a lot of important points in architecture, design, learning and development of a professional that AI can help with and there I was this semester. The course enabled me to understand how AI can be applied to the built environment context and critically engage with the field from a practical view.
I found that a key thing I learned is that AI must be used as a tool, not a replacement for the knowledge and creativity of man. I was hoping for AI to give me 100% of the answers right off the bat in the beginning of the semester. But as I learned in my experiments and through practice, the caliber of the AI output is largely dictated by the user's skills in asking the right questions, giving clear directions, and critically gauging the answers.
I tried out a few different AI platforms along the way such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Grok, and Dall-E, and realized that each of these tools was great in different situations and that it is as important to choose the right tool as it is to use it.
I was very useful for research and information gathering, Gemini. It was of great assistance to me when studying subjects from multiple angles, learning complex things and gathering information in an efficient manner on assignments and projects at the beginning. When I needed explanations, summaries or background information to aid my learning, Gemini proved very useful.
One of my go-to resources for idea generation and information organisation was ChatGPT. It helped me to plan the content of a project, develop initial ideas, and sharpen presentation skills. Was especially helpful for me when I required help turning ideas into a more coherent and consistent presentation.
Claude was very helpful to review written material and edit academic writing. It helped me to make my reports more precise, to structure my sentences and to make my reflections more coherent and professional. I have found Claude to be a great way to learn about how AI can be utilized to improve my communication and written work.
Among the most fascinating tools I've discovered was DALL·E. Visual Communication plays a vital role in a student's process of design as an architecture student. In my role as a web designer, I used DALL·E to visualize ideas for design concepts, descriptions, and architectural projects. It was much faster than traditional visualization methods to obtain an exploration of different design atmospheres, materials, lighting conditions, spatial experiences etc. This experience was a valuable experience for me, as it has given me insight into the potential of AI-generated images for conceptual design and creative exploration.
Prompt writing was one of the other useful writing skills I learned in this course. I had initially gotten outputs that were too vague and ambiguous to what I was looking for. I realized there were many improvements in the results as I worked on adding some more detailed prompts. The ability to communicate with AI systems became another one of my most valuable skills acquired over the course of the semester.
Another lesson I learnt in the course was on the role of human judgment. While AI can provide rapid ideas, pictures and information, not all of it is necessarily correct. Occasionally, answers were incorrect, incomplete or unrealistic suggestions were offered. The experiences made me realize that architects and designers need to remain vigilant when using AI-generated content and always ensure that it is accurate and suitable for their academic and professional projects.
The second advantage to artificial intelligence has been on productivity. AI can streamline the process of finding, writing or organizing information to make many tasks more efficient. This meant that I could devote more of my attention to design development, creativity and critical thinking. AI did not replace my work, but rather assisted me in being more organized and efficient.
I liked the most about this course would be the exploration and hands-on approach. The course was about more than just theory and concepts; it was a chance to play around with tools, make comparisons, discover the potential of AI and build our personal perspectives on its responsible application. The practice-based learning approach was engaging and applicable to future professional practice.
In the future, I think AI is going to have a number of impacts in the architecture and built environment, such as in the visualization of design concepts, research, documentation, sustainability assessment, and communication. But, creative, ethical and human-centred thinking will always be important attributes that technology cannot be substituted for.
Summing up, this course has helped me realize my understanding of Artificial Intelligence and its implementation in the field of Architecture. It helped me to understand how to leverage AI, knowing which of the features is suitable for different tasks, how to create better prompts and how to critically analyse the output from AI. For starters, it taught me that the future of architecture is not necessarily a human versus the AI, but rather a human and the AI teaming up for greater success.
