The project focused on designing a tropical eco resort while utilizing multiple AI tools to support research, concept development, visualization, and presentation design. This experience allowed me to better understand both the advantages and limitations of AI in architecture and the importance of maintaining human judgment throughout the design process.
One of the most valuable aspects of this assignment was the ability of AI tools to accelerate the research phase. Claude AI helped identify key sustainability strategies relevant to tropical architecture, including passive cooling, natural ventilation, local materials, water management systems, and ecological site planning. Instead of spending long periods searching through multiple sources, I was able to quickly gather and organize information that formed the foundation of the project. This demonstrated how AI can significantly improve efficiency during the early stages of design.
ChatGPT played an important role in concept development. Through iterative prompting, I was able to generate design ideas, refine architectural concepts, and explore different approaches for the eco resort. The process highlighted the importance of prompt engineering. Initial prompts often produced generic results, while more specific prompts generated outputs that were more aligned with sustainability goals and architectural requirements. This taught me that the quality of AI-generated responses depends heavily on the clarity and detail of the instructions provided.
Gemini AI was particularly useful for visualization. It transformed written concepts into architectural images that helped communicate the atmosphere and character of the proposed resort. The visual outputs provided inspiration and allowed me to quickly evaluate different design directions. However, the generated images were not always accurate or suitable for the project requirements. Several iterations were necessary before achieving results that reflected the intended design vision. This reinforced the idea that AI-generated visuals should be viewed as conceptual tools rather than final design solutions.
Canva AI assisted in the preparation of presentation materials. It helped organize content, improve layout composition, and create visually appealing slides. This reduced the amount of time required for formatting and allowed me to focus more on the design narrative and communication of ideas. The integration of AI into presentation design demonstrated how these tools can support not only design generation but also project communication.
Despite these benefits, the assignment also revealed several limitations of AI. The tools often lacked contextual understanding, cultural sensitivity, and site-specific awareness. AI could generate ideas and images, but it could not fully evaluate functionality, user experience, or the practical implications of design decisions. These aspects still required architectural knowledge and critical thinking.
Overall, this assignment demonstrated that AI is most effective when used as a supporting tool rather than a replacement for designers. While AI improved efficiency, creativity, and exploration, human judgment remained essential for evaluating results, refining ideas, and making final decisions. As an architecture student, I believe AI will become an increasingly valuable part of the design process, but successful outcomes will continue to depend on the designer's ability to guide, assess, and improve AI-generated content.
