A well-designed verandah layer pre-cools incoming air and is one of the highest-leverage single design moves in a tropical context.

Local materials: reduce embodied carbon dramatically and almost always result in buildings that fit their landscape more gracefully. Bamboo, compressed earth blocks, and thatch are the strongest performers in tropical Asia and Central America. The key constraint is craft — these materials require skilled local tradespeople, which is both a challenge and an opportunity for community employment.

Water management: becomes relatively straightforward in high-rainfall tropical climates once the closed-loop logic is established: harvest from roofs, store in cisterns, treat grey and black water through constructed wetlands, and return treated water to irrigation and aquaponics rather than to a drain.

The precedents: converge on a few common lessons — constraint-led design (Ninh Van Bay's boat-only access, Longitude 131°'s demountability) produces the most genuinely sustainable outcomes. Guest education that makes the systems visible converts sustainability from a cost centre into a differentiating experience. And community integration — local employment, local food, local craft — is what separates certifiable eco-resorts from greenwash.
